8 reasons to upgrade to iPhone 6S, 6S Plus

Fact 1: For the first time ever, the latest iPhones debut in India within a month of the global launch. Fact 2: An iPhone model is within kissing distance of the outrageous price tag of Rs 1 lakh, again a first.
Fact 3: Apple is seen as catering to a niche segment of buyers with its flagship iPhones.
Fact 4: Apple’s prices head north every year, higher than any rival.
Fact 5: iPhone’s India prices are the highest anywhere in the world.

Now, if you have an iPhone 6 or even 5S, would you consider upgrading to iPhone 6 or 6S Plus, other than for the aspirational value? With Apple nowhere close to giving exchange offers or operator-subsidized phone deals, is it really worth shelling out anywhere between Rs 62,000 and Rs 92,000, particularly as it looks much the same?

If you are an existing iPhone 5S, 6 or 6 Plus user, we list eight possible reasons to help you decide if you should upgrade to iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus...

1. 3D Touch

3D Touch
Apple’s version of Force Touch technology for smartphones, which debuted with Apple Watch, makes the world of difference in how you’d use your iPhone in the times to come.

You can quickly Peek (and Pop if needed) using a gentle press and a longer press anywhere on the screen across an array of essentials such as Mail, Messages, Notes, Calendar, Camera, Photos, Video, Safari, Weather and Music, without having to move out of the app you are in. Not only is it integrated well enough to give you dropdown menu options for multitasking better, but as more and more developers add 3D Touch support in apps, it will take the iOS experience to an altogether new level.

This includes, for instance, a quick glance on dates, events, meetings, web links, flight numbers or shipment tracking info. Next updates of Instagram, Pinterest, Dropbox, Facebook, WeChat, PixelToys and ZORG will support 3D Touch. But wait till you see the 3D Touch integrated action and racing games!

2. Camera

Camera
With iPhones, it is never about the megapixels packed, but about the technological advancements that enable you to take great photos with seemingly lesser-blessed cameras. Stuck at 8MP rear camera since iPhone 4S, Apple has finally decided to push the envelope towards better-looking pictures. Even though Apple kept improving upon the quality of its sensors, particularly in iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, a combination of factors take pictures shot with iPhone 6S and 6S Plus to a new level.

Though 6S and 6S Plus are supposed to be iterative models before a fully-revamped iPhone 7 is launched next September, the camera capabilities have gone up several notches. Similarly, selfies with iPhone 6S Plus in low light conditions turn out much better. This is not merely because of the 5MP front cam but because of optical image stabilization and the Retina Flash, which lights up the entire screen three times brighter to burst the right amount of light on your face after checking for the available ambient light via a pre-flash.

3. 4K videos

4K videos
The combination of new camera sensor and A9 processor enable 4K ultra high definition video recording, a first in iPhones. But what goes to Apple’s credit is the fact that even as we shot a 5-minute 4K test video, we faced no glitches or heating issues. Perhaps, that is why Apple has the confidence to not artificially limit the recording minutes.

The new video stabilization support in iPhone 6S Plus makes shooting even slightly longer or slo-mo videos more stable. And finally, you can zoom in to a particular area of the frame while recording and capture slo-mo videos in 1080p at 120fps. If you want to slow it down further, you can record in 720p at 240 fps.

4. Live Photos

Live Photos
It is another feel-good feature available only in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. If you are confused about it, think of having the option of shooting a 3-second GIF with voice each time you shoot a still.

You can share Live Photos using iMessage, iCloud Photo Sharing, or AirDrop, as well as other Apple devices, including Apple Watch. Shared elsewhere, Live Photo is sent as a still photo, or if you decide to edit it. Apple will be coming out soon with new API for Live Photos, so that developers can add app-to-app sharing of Live Photos as well. So it is a matter of time before you can share Live Photos on Facebook and Whatsapp.

We found playing with Live Photos fun as they make for livelier wallpapers, but more usage for it will be discovered.

5. Battery

October 16,2015
Battery
Even though teardown-based reports indicate iPhone 6S Plus actually has a smaller capacity battery (2750mAh) compared to iPhone 6 Plus (2915mAh), Apple claims the talk-time and standby time of iPhone 6S Plus remain the same. And that is despite the new A9 processor and 4K video recording capability.

So if you have been suffering the poor battery life of iPhone 5, iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, there is every chance that iPhone 6S Plus won’t disappoint you. One can’t say the same for iPhone 6S, although Apple claims the latest software and hardware tweaks have improved the battery performance in both.

6. Build quality

October 16,2015
Build quality
Compared to previous-generation models, the new iPhones are stronger and less likely to break or crack. Apple says it has used aerospace-grade aluminium casing for the back and the “toughest possible glass available in smartphone manufacturing”.

These two materials promise that your smartphone won’t break easily, but we are loath to test the validity of that claim on our handsets.

7. Processor & RAM

October 16,2015
Processor & RAM
While nobody upgrades phones for better processors or RAM alone (least of all iPhone users), Apple claims the new A9 processor that powers iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is almost 90% faster than the previous models in graphics rendering and 75% otherwise.

According to reports, the two new iPhones come with 2GB RAM, which is double the system memory of last year's models.

8. Faster LTE and Wi-Fi

October 16,2015
Faster LTE and Wi-Fi
Apple promises twice as fast data in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus with LTE Advanced (up to 300 Mbps) and now supports up to 23 LTE bands for better worldwide roaming.

It also supports 802.11ac with MIMO for faster Wi-Fi; it is twice as fast when you’re connected to Wi-Fi for data speeds up to 866 Mbps, as per Apple.
